Six practices, on purpose

We used to make two things and say so loudly. We now make six. What changed, what did not, and the boring math of adding a practice without diluting the first two.

For most of 2024 this page argued for focus. We made two things, websites and custom software, and we said no to almost everything else. That was the honest position at the time and we are leaving the argument here rather than quietly deleting it.

We now run six practices: custom web experiences, mobile apps, custom software, SEO with GEO, virtual experiences, and web-VR. That looks like exactly the drift the old post warned about, so it is worth explaining what actually changed.

Each new practice had to clear the same bar: we were already being asked for it by clients we had shipped for, and we could staff it properly rather than subcontract it. Mobile apps arrived because the software clients needed a phone surface for the systems we had already built them. Virtual and web-VR arrived out of the 3D work we were doing on the web side, not out of a trend deck.

What did not change is the thing the old post was really about. Nothing is outsourced. The person who takes your brief still writes the code. Every project still starts on an empty file rather than a theme, you still own the repository from day one, and a year of maintenance is still included rather than sold back monthly.

The honest version of the focus argument was never "two is the right number". It was "do not sell what you cannot ship yourself". Six practices, staffed in one room, is still that. If we are ever asked for a seventh and the answer is a subcontractor, the answer will be no.
